The aroma of damp dirt and the sweet smell of vibrant green grass is carried by a light summer breeze that wisps through ones hair, after a light shower of rain. Your skin is kissed by the last remaining strong rays of the sun as it is setting, leaving the reminiscence of a hot day. An ablaze palette of colors dance in the early evenings sky gradient of indigo to pastel ice blue backdrop to the clouds of crimson, lilac, and a light roseate. These sunset clouds are met with an apricot and golden yellow where the sky meets the Earth of the badland plateaus. The sun is closing the chapter of the day to rest, for a new page of its story to begin again.

Inspired by the creative world around us, how there are multiple senses that get activated in our environments. The hands are also inspired by my own and how I use them constantly; such as creating art, climbing, ASL, and much more. My ambition was to achieve a piece that may perk up one of the senses, whether it be visual, touch of texture, smell of the wildflower perfume, and maybe imagine hearing the trickle of water as it falls from the hands.

This year marks the thirtieth anniversary after the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted making it all the more possible for everyone to thrive equally in communities! This small series is a reflection of how the ADA has paved a way for us to flourish, especially in the education system by providing access and supportive accommodations; just like the Office for Student’s with Disabilities (OSD) at UC San Diego.

This picture represents a small tribute to some of the amazing women that inhabit our Mother Earth. First attempt at portrait drawing, this was a challenge for me to capture the beauty and essence of different facial structures. Nahasdzáán translates to “Earth Women” in Navajo bringing light to the Indigenous/Native Community that I belong to, and UC San Diego’s Intertribal Resource Center (ITRC).
